This is horrible but I guess that's how they roll.

All of this is also a reason to reconsider rules that require the disclosure of political donations. This sounds appealing in theory, the Supreme Court has ruled that disclosure is Constitutional, and these columns have supported it as part of a political compromise that would allow unlimited donations.

But it's increasingly clear that the real point of these disclosure laws is not to inform voters but to get donor names in order to intimidate them from participating in politics. The goal is to dispatch hired guns like Mr. Simpson on political opponents to trash their reputations.

Democrats and their left-wing allies should understand that Republicans and Mormons will not be the only targets. If Democrats think it is "legitimate" to prowl and publish the divorce records of Romney donors, no one should feign shock if some right-wing investigator is soon doing the same to Mr. Obama's bundlers and super PAC donors. A President who claims to want "civility" in political discourse will reap what he sows if he plays by Nixonian rules.

How low will the Democrats go???

I fear that America as a nation is like Humpty Dumpty sitting on the wall.
If we do not take a vacuum cleaner to our politics, we are doomed to end up like mr. dumpty and too broken to fix.

PACS, FOI request, PC hacker crews millions of dollars spent etc. all are indicators that our system is as corrupt as any has ever been.

If we do not wake up and severely limit the length and cost of our campaigns, we will fail as a nation.

But to me, what we have now is two distant groups each insisting they are totally correct and the other side is totally incorrect and there is no way to move to the center. We are about to self destruct.

I agree with a lot of that but the bottom line is this... we cannot keep spending like we have been and running 5 trillion dollars of debt every three years.

Our debt is going to overwhelm us. We cannot increase taxes enough to cover our spending. We will suck all the money out of our economy. We have GOT to cut spending. People are just going to have to re-learn how to tighten their belts. Some families may have to move in with parents... take jobs they don't really want to do... etc. We're going to have to learn to do with some luxuries that we take for granted. It's going to be painful. If we stick with the Democratic plan we will run into a ditch...

I agree with your first paragraph entirely. Our debt may be lethal.

Frankly, I had just as soon see that Committee bill that might take place requiring drastic across the board cuts go ahead and take place. It will cause an immediate recession because of so much give away money taken out, but the medicine is needed to get our budget under control. But both sides are trying to avoid the committee mandates from happening. The trouble is of course, each side wants the other side to be the one to take the medicine.

I have little hope that this Congress or the next will truly desire to fix our budget.

If any of you watch TV there was a report of this where people who used to work in Congress now work for these intelligence groups who are really working for lobbyist. When the Supreme Court in all their wisdom decreed that corporations are people, they took the power away from regular citizens. Now a billionaire can donate millions to a PAC and try to control a candidate. There is a lot of waste in this country. Giving money to farmers which a lot of farms now are owned by corporations, money to oil companies and the list goes on. We need to cut the gifts to corporations to zero before deciding to raise taxes and most will disagree on this, we need some deficit spending to spur the economy.
