Stoops' Sooners loaded for another run

Experts project Oklahoma to be great in 2006. Here are a couple reasons why: The Sooners return a more mature QB in Rhett Bomar, RB Adrian Peterson should go for 1,500 yards, and the defense could be one of the best in the Bob Stoops era. The annual season maker? The Red River Shootout on Oct. 7. The college football-watching nation waits. Next up: OKLAHOMA.

BRIEFLY: Hype machine already working overtime
8-4, 6-2 in the Big 12 in 2005
There was a time when 8-4 would be cause for celebration. Instead, last season spurred disappointment. But Athlon Sports has the Sooners at No. 1. The pack of preseason pubs will anoint them a Top 10 team, as well. That's because besides showing character in finishing up 6-1, the Sooners return one of three Big 12 QBs that led their team to a bowl, a Heisman Trophy candidate in Peterson, and a defense that has warranted hard-to-please Stoops to mutter "special."

Four of the last five league games will be on the road - a tough task for anyone. But if Oklahoma is 8-0 entering November, it could be revved to coast into Kansas City.

Worthy of the hype? Check back after Oct. 7.
