Four-star Martin makes college choice public

Carlton Martin finally made it official.

Long thought to be a heavy Ole Miss lean, the four-star defensive tackle informed the Rebels he would be a Rebel at the next level. Martin is rated as the No. 24 defensive tackle nationally for the 2010 class.

"I love the way Ole Miss plays defense and chases the ball," Martin said in a previous interview. "I'm familiar with the team and the campus. It's a place I could see myself out and be at home."

Martin has been quite mum during the recruiting process regarding a leader, but he holds offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Michigan State, Syracuse and Texas Tech.

The 6-foot-2, 268-pounder could stay at defensive tackle or move out to defensive end when he gets to Oxford, Miss. Although Martin never took an official visit, he made numerous trips unofficially during the Rebels' season. In UM's home finale against LSU, Martin wore a red and blue knit cap and an Ole Miss sweatshirt.

Martin's sister, Charnell, is a freshman at Ole Miss, and while that wasn't a major factor in the decision, it certainly didn't hurt the situation.

"It gives a familiarity because we're always talking about Ole Miss and being up there," Martin said in September. "My sister really likes it. It's always nice to have someone where you go, but it's not going to make my decision."

The opportunity for early playing time is present as three Rebel defensive tackles - Jerrell Powe, Ted Laurent and Lawon Scott - will be seniors in 2010, and Ole Miss returns only one letterman - Kentrell Lockett - at defensive end.

Ole Miss also recruiting Martin's teammate, Bryon Bennett, who is a three-star defensive tackle. Bennett is officially visiting Ole Miss the weekend of January 22-24.
