Rebels raid Hargrave for another offensive tackle
Terrence Hackney's stock jumped during the past several months.
The big offensive tackle from Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy gave up his basketball dreams during his junior year in high school in the hoops hotbed of Chapel Hill, N.C., enrolled at Hargrave and quickly started turning heads.Ole Miss was one of the first schools to offer the 6-foot-7, 320-pounder, and on Friday night, the Rebels were rewarded when Hackney committed to Houston Nutt during his official visit to Oxford.
"I feel at home," Hackney said in a text message to RebelSports.net. "It's nice and small and everything is close together."
Hackney spurned late offers from Georgia and Mississippi State. He was also pursued by Marshall and East Carolina.
"It put some thoughts in my mind, but I went back to thinking about how when I came to Hargrave, I had nothing," Hackney said Tuesday, a day in which college coaches converged on the school in Chatham, Va., to watch Hargrave's plethora of Division I talent work out during the Tigers' annual combine. "Ole Miss was on me first and they've stuck with me."
Hackney is the fourth offensive line prospect to commit to the Rebels for the 2010 signing class, joining Evan Swindall (who grayshirted and began practice at Ole Miss Saturday), Jared Duke and Chase Hughes. The Rebels are expected to sign five or six offensive linemen in this class.
Hackney is eligible to enroll at Ole Miss next month and go through spring drills.
"I want to come in and bust my butt and earn a spot quickly," Hackney said via text message Saturday.
Hackney, a three-star prospect who is ranked by Rivals.com as the nation's No. 43 prep school prospect. It marks the second straight year Ole Miss has turned to Hargrave for help on the offensive front. The Rebels signed former five-star prospect Bobby Massie in Feburary.
