Howie heading to Starkville for visit

Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen wanted to get his junior college transfers enrolled in January in order to participate in spring practice.

But the Bulldogs may make an exception for three-star defensive tackle Jeff Howie of Itawamba Community College. The 6-foot-4, 330-pounder will officially visit the Starkville campus this weekend.

Howie made an appearance at MSU in October along with former Bulldog signee and ICC teammate Darius Slay for the Florida game. He is hoping to learn even more about the school during this visit.

"I went to the Florida game this year so I've already seen how their playing atmosphere is going to be," Howie said. "I'm just going down there now to see things better. When I came to the Florida game I saw how their players were so hyped and I just wished that I was playing in that game."

Howie has yet to receive an offer from the Bulldogs but stated that he hopes that changes this weekend.

Howie already has offers from Louisiana-Monroe, Ohio, South Florida, Southern Miss, Troy and Western Kentucky. He visited Southern Miss on Nov. 20 and Ohio last weekend and is scheduled for a South Florida and Western Kentucky visit in the next two weeks.

But the trip to Tampa could be put on hold until after the Bulls hire a new head coach.

"I've got a South Florida visit lined up but I'm going to postpone it until they get a head coach," Howie said.

The attention from schools is a welcome sight for the Chester, Pa., native. He originally signed with Temple as a two-star prospect out of West High School in 2007 and has taken three years to make it to this point.
