Hughes healed up and ready to go

Jay Hughes was one of four Division-I signees that Oak Grove High School produced this year.

Hughes along with teammate Robert Johnson announced their commitment to Mississippi State on Dec. 15 and inked their national letter of intent with the Bulldogs on national signing day.

"It was more than just us signing, we also had Vince Taylor signing with Vanderbilt and Steve McNair signing with Southern Miss," Hughes said. "They just had some tables set up for us and everybody from the school came into the library and watched us sign. It was a fun experience and I'm never going to forget about it."

Hughes had scholarship offers from Auburn, Duke, Louisiana Tech, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Tulsa, Vanderbilt and West Virginia while Johnson had an even longer list. Their commitment to MSU caused a little classroom friction during their recruitiment.

"It's actually been kind of crazy," Hughes said. "We've got a lot of teachers that graduated from Ole Miss, Southern Miss and Mississippi State. They were all pressing their school on us. The ones that graduated from Mississippi State still talk to us and the rest of them don't hardly speak."

Hughes is up to 180-pounds now on his 5-foot-11 frame but has not been able to get into his full workout routine sent to him by Mississippi State just yet.
