Johnson named Ohio MVP in Big 33 game

Although his team came out on the short end of the 61-42 final score, future Hawkeye Derrell Johnson earned MVP honors for the Ohio squad in the 49th annual Big 33 Football Classic on Saturday. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Youngstown native played quarterback and wide receiver in the game, racking up nearly 300 combined yards.

While Johnson connected on a 78 yard touchdown pass and ran 41 yards for another score, his favorite play was a 39 yard touchdown catch in the second quarter as a wide receiver, which is the position he will play in college for the Hawkeyes.

One of Johnson's opponents in the Big 33 game this past weekend was Pennsylvania's Jeremiha Hunter, who will be joining him at the University of Iowa this year. The 6-foot 2, 220-pound Hunter, who had two tackles for a loss in the game, and Johnson had the chance to get know one another during the week.

Up next for Johnson is a trip to Iowa City in July to train with the team for a couple weeks during off-season workouts. He will then return home to the Youngstown area briefly before reporting back to Iowa on August 3rd for camp. Johnson, who is hoping to play this year as a true freshman, looks forward to helping the Hawkeyes in the 2006 season.
