Thompson makes big jump in rankings

Carlos Thompson moved into the Rivals100 Tuesday afternoon.

If the leap in the national prospect rankings caused the four-star defensive end to reflect upon his accomplishment, Thompson wasn't letting on later that night.

Instead, Thompson, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound defensive end from Hollandale (Simmons), Miss., said Rivals.com's high opinion of him only serves as motivation.

"Really, to be honest, it encourages me to work harder, to get better, to stay in the weight room," said Thompson, who moved into the latest Rivals100 at No. 69, just two spots behind Olive Branch, Miss., offensive tackle Damien Robinson.

Thompson has spent the last couple of weeks in spring drills, a key part of the Simmons team that his father, Carlos Thompson, Sr., coaches.

"It's going fine," said Thompson, who said he has been putting extra emphasis on working with his hands as well as quickening his feet during drills. "I get pushed harder than other players (as the coach's son)."

As for recruiting, Thompson has offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi, Vanderbilt and Baylor. All five schools have stopped by the school to see him since the spring evaluation period began. He said he has no favorites at this point.

"They're telling me I have the right size and when I get there, I can put weight on," Thompson said, summarizing the message the various coaches are delivering during talks this spring. "They say I'll fit right in because I have speed."

Thompson said he has developed close relationships with three assistant coaches in particular -- Mississippi State's Melvin Smith and Ole Miss' Terry Price and Derrick Nix.

"They're telling me to keep up my grades, stay in the weight room, continue to work hard and be a leader for my football team," Thompson said.

Thompson said he has plans to camp this summer at Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Southern Miss. He said he plans to choose a college home sometime during his senior season.

Thompson had 115 tackles and 10 quarterback sacks as a junior.
