Wells attending MSU season opener
Four-star athlete Matthew Wells proved he is very deserving on all the preseason hype in his senior debut last Friday.
The 6-foot-, 190-pounder rushed 18 times for 197 yards and one touchdown and also the game-winning 17-yard score as time expired to lift Lawrence County over Callaway 27-26.
"The game came down to the last second," Wells said. "We recovered a fumble somewhere around the 40. I got in as the quarterback and ran down a good bit inside the 20. Then with 1.8 seconds they split me out and threw it and I caught it in the back of the end zone."
Wells' rushing touchdown came from 57-yards out and he also added seven tackles (six solo, one assist) defensively.
Wells and the Cougars will be on the road tonight traveling to Vicksburg taking on Warren Central. The Vikings lost 35-21 last week to Gulfport but Wells was impressed with what he saw on film.
"They are pretty good," Wells said of Warren Central. "Their running back is really good. He breaks a lot of tackles and is pretty quick with good feet. Their quarterback is pretty good when he is in the pocket and they've got good receivers and a pretty good line so we've got to come out stronger than we did last week. Last week we got up 21-6 and didn't score again until the fourth quarter."
There is nothing new on the recruiting front for the Dandy Dozen selection. He holds offers from Arkansas State, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Stanford and Tennessee.
