Bergner goes from off the radar to Army Bowl

MORE: U.S. Army All-American Bowl

Miles Bergner accepted his U.S. Army All-American Bowl jersey on Wednesday but he's unlike any other player in the game this season.

Bergner is not a national name. Not even close to it. And he doesn't seem to mind.

The Longmont, Colo., kicker is committed to South Dakota. Bergner has another offer from Northern Colorado and he will take a trip to Air Force soon although he doesn't figure he'll back off his commitment.

Exposure will be plenty in San Antonio but Bergner said forget it, he loves the program and the coaching staff at South Dakota and that's where he plans to play his college football.

"I'm committed to South Dakota pretty solidly," Bergner said. "I'm just in love with Joe Glenn and his staff.

"At this point I don't feel like I need (recruiting attention) anymore. South Dakota has basically in simple words said I'm the starting kicker and punter for the team next year so there's nothing better than starting all four years in college and trying to rewrite record books - and playing inside."

With his recruiting seemingly finished, Bergner has turned his focus to playing in the Army game and for a kid from Longmont, Colo., who's playing his college ball at South Dakota this is going to be a big deal.

There are mixed emotions -- definitely some anticipatory nervousness mixed with awe and excitement to play on such a big stage -- and overall the 6-foot-1, 200-pound prospect said he cannot wait to get to San Antonio and get things going.

"The biggest feeling is being honored like this and having the honor to play in this game," Bergner said. "I'm excited and nervous at the same time so there are a bunch of mixed emotions at the same time.

"I'm still kind of in shock about it. There are a couple other guys who must be in the same position where they didn't know, this was unexpected, so it's a huge honor and I'm extremely excited."

Bergner is also excited about the possibility to kick inside the Alamodome in front of thousands of people. He's done some inside kicking before, but nothing like this, so Bergner just hopes he gets his chance.

"I've seen the inside of it during bowl games but the prospect of kicking in there it's going to be weird," Bergner said. "I've kicked in a dome before but I've never kicked in a dome that big."
