Prowell leads Auburn to 10th win

Quan Prowell had a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Auburn (10-4) to a 69-53 win over Charleston Southern (5-9) at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum Saturday.

"We played very well defensively," head coach Jeff Lebo said. "We had a lot of looks offensively but we couldn't put the ball in the bucket."

Rasheem Barrett had 10 points and Josh Dollard added 10 points, seven boards and four steals. Korvotney Barber and Frank Tolbert chipped-in eight points apiece, while Quantez Robertson dished out five dimes with no turnovers.

"We are still a little ways away from being the best we can be, but we are figuring it our," Lebo said. "There are five or six guys we can count on and we are getting better offensively."

The Buccaneers were led by Chris Moore's 16 points, while Donnell Covington added 11.

The Tigers stretched their lead to 50-33 on a three by Prowell with 11:34 to go in the game, but Charleston Southern worked it back to single digits, 57-48 on a three by Moore at the 5:01 mark. The Buccaneers would get no closer than eight the rest of the way, as two late three-pointers by Prowell gave the Tigers a 69-53 win.

Barber picked up two quick fouls in just over one minute of play, with the second coming at the 18:48 mark. With Auburn trailing 11-9, the Tigers went on a 15-0 run over a 5:20 span, that began with a pair of Prowell free throws at 10:47.

Charleston Southern answered with a 10-2 run of their own to bring the Buccaneers within five, 26-21 with 3:13 to go in the first, but Auburn closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 33-22 lead at halftime. The Tigers had eight first half steals and forced the Buccaneers into 15 turnovers.

Charleston Southern managed just 17 made field goals on the day, a season-low for an Auburn opponent, with six coming from behind the arc. The Buccaneers 53 points was also a season-low for an Auburn opponent.

Auburn will next be in action as it hits the road to face Southern Miss (9-2) on Jan. 2 for its final game of the non-conference schedule. Game time is set for 6 p.m. Central in Hattiesburg, Miss.
