Razorback head coach Bret Bielema has filled his vacancy at offensive coordinator with Central Michigan head coach Dan Enos.
Enos, 46, was the head coach and play-caller for Central Michigan the last five years and was coming off a 7-6 record and a 1-point loss to Western Michigan following a 34-0 fourth quarter in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl. WKU took the win 49-48 after a failed 2-point conversion by Enos' Chippewas at the end of the game. He was a two-year starter at quarterback for Michigan State, leading the Spartans to records of 8-4 and 8-3-1 in 1989 and 1990.
"I want to thank Bret for this wonderful opportunity to be part of something special at the University of Arkansas," Enos stated in a release. "The challenge of winning a championship in the SEC and developing young men at the highest level of college football is very attractive. Bret and I share many of the same philosophies and I'm excited to open the next chapter of my coaching career down in Fayetteville."
According to Robbie Neiswanger of Arkansas News, Enos comes with a $350,000 buyout from Central Michigan and will earn $550,000 annually through 2018. The contract comes with a non-compete clause regarding any assistant coaching job in the SEC. He could leave for a head coaching position. At Central Michigan, he made a base salary of $285,000 a year off a 2013 contract extension that included an extra $75,000 for media responsibilities for a total of $360,000. Former UA offensive coordinator Jim Chaney made just over $550,000 last season. UA defensive coordinator Robb Smith had a similar salary in 2014 before being bumped to $750,000 for 2014 after a top-10 defensive finish.
"We are thrilled to have Coach Enos joining us in Fayetteville," Bielema stated. "Dan is a great fit for our program. He runs a pro-style offense and brings expertise at the quarterback position as both a player and coach. We played against each other in college and he was a very intelligent and talented quarterback who showed great toughness and leadership. He has an outstanding reputation and will be a tremendous asset for Razorback football."
Running game philosophy
In terms of getting big offensive linemen, that was their recruiting focus - getting big, athletic offensive linemen that could get a push at the line of scrimmage. They had a few running backs that were quicker backs, but by in large they wanted guys that were more physical downhill runners.
"He runs a pro-style offense, similar to the Mark Dantonio school of coaching. Similar to Bielema in terms of offensive philosophy, I think. Central Michigan wanted to run the ball a lot. Even when they've had guys that could throw the ball and they had good receivers, they still wanted to run the ball a lot," ChippewaCountry.com Publisher Steve Livingston said.
Thomas Rawls, a transfer from Michigan who was a senior in 2014, rushed for 1,103 yards and 10 touchdowns last season in nine games, and he was a bigger back at 6-0, 217. Zurlon Tipton, a 6-0, 231-pounder, ran for 1,492 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2012 under Enos.
Passing game philosophy
Enos likes to use the play-action for their vertical game, and while he would like to use tight ends more, most of his tight ends have been of the blocking variety. However, David Blackburn blossomed into a really nice tight end for Enos in 2010 and 2011 after being a 2-star recruit. Blackburn had 34 catches for 479 yards (14.1 yards per catch) with 5 touchdowns in 2011 as a senior.
Enos seems to get several receivers involved, including some action for the backs, but there always seems to be a guy that's good for 60-80 catches a season, including Cody Wilson (83 for 1,137 and 5 touchdowns in 2010 and 74 for 840 and 3 touchdowns) and Titus Davis (61 catches for 1,109 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2013 and 60 catches for 980 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2014). Davis is a taller receiver at 6-2, while Wilson was 5-9. Davis also hauled in 43 catches for 860 yards (20.0 yards per catch) with 8 touchdowns in 2012 alongside Wilson.
The quarterbacks
Enos has recruited a good number of dual-threat quarterbacks, but for the most part his QBs have been more pocket passers. Both of his 2015 quarterback commitments are listed as pro-style, but the high school QBs he brought in for 2013 and 2014 were both dual threat quartebacks. It is believed however based on his recruitment that he would prefer to have a dual-threat QB under center. Last season Cooper Rush completed 243 of 382 passes for 3,157 yards (63.7 percent) with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions (149.6 efficiency rating). He threw every pass for the Chippewas and averaged 242.8 yards per game through the air. In four of his five years at Central Michigan, he has had a 3,000-yard passer.
Statistics on offense
During his tenure at Central Michigan, the Chippewas have always been somewhere between 6th and 8th out of 13 teams in the MAC when it comes to scoring offense and have been anywhere from 3rd to 9th in total offense. However, they are always one of the more balanced teams in the MAC. Two of the last three years, Central Michigan has gone over 2,000 rushing yards and 3,000 passing yards for the season. In 2014, they ranked 5th in the MAC in both rushing yards and passing yards per game. They were 70th in total offense last season, just seven spots behind Arkansas, which ran for 2,834 yards and passed for 2,444.
They also faced three Power-5 Conference teams in games at Purdue (38-17 win), at Kansas (24-10 loss) and against Syracuse (40-3 loss).
The state of Central Michigan
The Chippewas were coming off a 7-6 record under Enos with a 1-point loss to Western Kentucky in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl, 49-48, after a furious comeback that came down to a failed 2-point conversion attempt. Down 49-14, Central Michigan scored 34 answered points, all in the fourth quarter before going for the win in regulation with a failed fade to the back corner of the end zone.
The team returns at least 9 starters each on offense and defense, including both the kicker and punter.
As a recruiter
When Dantonio took over at Michigan State in 2007, the only coach he retained from the previous staff was Enos. Enos joined the Michigan State Staff the year before D'Antonio arrived under former head coach John L. Smith, who also served as interim head coach at Arkansas in 2012. D'Antonio moved him from quarterbacks coach to running backs coach in an effort to make room for him on the staff. It turned out to be a great move - especially regarding recruiting.
In 2009, Enos was named one of Rivals.com's Top-25 recruiters. That year at Michigan State with his main recruiting ground being Michigan, Enos was the primary recruiter for nine Michigan State commitments, including six 4-star recruits in running backs Edwin Baker and Larry Caper, wide receiver Donald Spencer, tight end Dion Sims and linebackers Jeremy Gainer and Chris Norman. In 2008, he brought in 10 recruits for Michigan State, including 4-star receiver Fred Smith.
    DAN ENOS, MICHIGAN STATE
Buzz Michigan State was one of the nation's top surprises, and a big reason was the efforts of Enos. He secured commitments from nine players locally, including six four-star prospects. He helped land two talented running backs in Edwin Baker and Larry Caper. Enos, a former Spartans quarterback, grew up in the Detroit area and has made recruiting that area for his alma mater his passion. It paid off with a tremendous recruiting class for Michigan State. The adjustment
Livingston said the adjustment from Butch Jones' spread offense to a pro-style attack took some getting used to for the Chippewa players, just like it was a big change for Bielema at Arkansas going from a heavier passing attack to a pro-style attack with a focus on the run. When Enos arrived at Central Michigan, they had lost several key players, there were no fullbacks and was only one true tight end.
Type of guy
While Livingston said the fans expected a little more and there were mixed reviews out of this season, especially with the big win at Purdue early in the season raising expectations, he said Livingston was well-liked as far as his personality and seemed to have the support of the administration.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas has named Dan Enos offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, head coach Bret Bielema announced Thursday.
Enos (pronounced Ee-nos) comes to Arkansas after five seasons as head coach at Central Michigan where he called offensive plays for the Chippewas. Throughout his career, Enos has a track record of developing offensive players. At CMU, he coached offensive tackle Eric Fisher, who became the first Mid-American Conference player to be selected No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft in 2013 by the Kansas City Chiefs. At Michigan State, Enos was the position coach for NFL draft picks Drew Stanton and Javon Ringer. He was named one of Rivals.com's Top 25 recruiters in the nation in 2009.
"We are thrilled to have Coach Enos joining us in Fayetteville," said Bielema.
Enos has history moving to a new environment with a senior quarterback. In 2006, he joined his alma mater, Michigan State, as the quarterbacks coach and mentored Drew Stanton, who earned team MVP honors after accounting for 2,252 total yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior. Following the season, Stanton was selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the NFL Draft.
In 2004, Enos became the quarterbacks coach at Cincinnati and inherited senior quarterback Gino Guidugli. He helped Guidugli finish his career as the school's all-time leading passer with 11,453 career yards, including 2,633 passing yards and 26 passing touchdowns as a senior.
"I want to thank Bret (Bielema) for this wonderful opportunity to be part of something special at the University of Arkansas," said Enos. "The challenge of winning a championship in the SEC and developing young men at the highest level of college football is very attractive. Bret and I share many of the same philosophies and I'm excited to open the next chapter of my coaching career down in Fayetteville."
Enos was hired as Central Michigan's head coach in 2010 and spent the past five seasons at the helm. He led the Chippewas to bowl eligibility in each of the past three seasons and coached in two bowl games, including a win over Western Kentucky in the 2012 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. Central Michigan passed for over 3,000 yards in four of his five seasons as head coach.
At CMU, Enos coached standout wide receiver Titus Davis, who recently finished his career as the first receiver in FBS history to catch at least eight touchdown passes in each of his four collegiate seasons. He leaves as the school's all-time leader in receiving yards (3,705), career touchdown receptions (37) and single-season touchdown receptions (13). Davis played all four seasons under Enos.
In 2014, Central Michigan led the MAC and ranked eighth nationally in time of possession, controlling the clock for an average of 33:24 per game. The Chippewas also excelled at passing efficiency, ranking third in the MAC and 18th nationally with a 149.55 efficiency rating. Junior quarterback Cooper Rush set an FBS bowl record with seven passing touchdowns in the Popeye's Bahamas Bowl.
In each of the past two seasons, Central Michigan ranked in the top half of the MAC in passing efficiency, third down conversion percentage and time of possession.
The Chippewas had a memorable 2012 campaign under Enos, winning its third bowl game in school history. Senior wide receiver Cody Wilson finished his career with 42 consecutive games with a reception and junior running back Zurlon Tipton rushed for 1,492 yards, the fourth-best single-season mark in school history. Tipton is currently on the active roster for the Indianapolis Colts.
Prior to Central Michigan, Enos spent four seasons in a variety of offensive roles at Michigan State. He served as the Spartans' running backs coach from 2007 to 2009 and coached quarterbacks in 2006.
Under Enos, Michigan State running back Javon Ringer led the nation in carries (390), scoring (132 points) and touchdowns (22) and ranked fourth in rushing (125.9 yards per game) in 2008. Ringer was named a consensus first-team All-American and was selected in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans.
At Michigan State, Enos was the position coach for three NFL running backs - Ringer, Edwin Baker and Jehuu Caulcrick. Baker was a seventh round draft pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2012 and Caulcrick played for the Buffalo Bills in 2010.
In 2004 and 2005, Enos coached quarterbacks at Cincinnati. In addition to coaching Guidugli, he mentored freshman quarterback Dustin Grutza in 2005. Grutza earned the team's Offensive Newcomer of the Year Award after starting all 11 games under center, completing 56 percent of his passes for 1,799 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also earned BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors after completing 17-of-26 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns in his first collegiate game against Eastern Michigan.
Enos served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for North Dakota State in 2003. He helped the Bison average 30.1 points per game in its final season as a member of NCAA Division II. North Dakota State finished the season at 8-3, including two Top 10 victories - at No. 3 Montana and against No. 8 Nebraska-Omaha.
Enos coached quarterbacks at Western Michigan from 2000 to 2002. All three of his Broncos teams passed for over 2,700 yards during his tenure. In 2000, he helped Western Michigan to a 9-3 record and a MAC West division title.
In 1999, Enos was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Missouri State. The Bears scored 33.9 points per game, the 23rd best mark in the nation, and passed for 258.8 yards per game, ranking No. 22 nationally.
Enos also spent time at Southern Illinois (Quarterbacks and wide receivers, 1997-98), Northern Michigan (Offensive coordinator and offensive backs, 1996) and Lakeland College (Offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and wide receivers, 1994-95). He served as a graduate assistant on Michigan State's staff from 1991 to 1993.
A standout quarterback at Michigan State, Enos started two seasons and earned a 16-7-1 record (.688) as a starter, leading the Spartans to bowl victories in both seasons. He still ranks No. 13 in school history in passing yards (3,837) and completions (297). His .621 completion percentage still ranks fourth-best in Spartan history.
Enos graduated from Michigan State with a degree in business administration in 1991 and earned his master's in sports administration in 2006.
