Former University of Arkansas offensive coordinator Paul Petrino has accepted the head coaching position at Idaho.
Petrino, who has 22 years of college coaching experience, held the coordinator position at Arkansas in 2008 and 2009 before calling plays for Illinois in 2010 and 2011. He rejoined brother Bobby Petrino at Arkansas for this season before Bobby was fired for cause in April.
Petrino was one of five finalists for the position. In 2010 he interviewed for several openings but did not find a position. He instead opted to leave for Illinois in hopes that being off on his own and calling plays would lead him to a head coaching position. But after two years Illini head coach Ron Zook was fired and Paul opted to return to the UA.
Former Razorback interim head coach John L. Smith coached the Vandals from 1989-94 and served as defensive coordinator there from 1982-85. It was Smith's first head coaching stop,a nd he compiled a record of 53-20 over six seasons.
