Coach's Take: CB Jamie Vance

Of Arkansas's six 2020 commits, Jamie "Greedy" Vance was the second to call the Hogs and he's one of two commits on the defensive side of the ball. Vance committed to Arkansas, the new home of his former teammate Devin Bush, over 14 other offers and he's continued to gain scholarship offers since announcing his decision.

No one knows Arkansas's commits like their high school coaches so Rivals caught up with Edna Karr football coach and recruiting coordinator Chris Degiovanni to get the inside scoop on Vance. The Karr football team won their second straight state title last season.

How Much of a Leader is Vance for the Team?

"He's a part of our pride committee, which is a leadership group for our team, so he's a big part of that. It's a player run program, so he's a big part of leading the team. He leads his group of defensive backs and he teaches the younger guys how to do their job and how to be a part of the program. He pushes the better players on the defense to get the best out of them. He's really grown up and come a long way being more vocal."

You Guys Don't Lose Often but How Does Jamie Respond to Negative Situations?

"When things aren't going his way I think he's one of those kids that just bites down and goes harder. When his back is against the wall, I think that's when you get the best out of him. A big part of this program is playing through adversity and not getting down on one play. When he makes a mistake, he learns from it, corrects it and moves on and I think he's really grown into that."

How Does He Respond to the Coaches?

"We coach them really hard. He accepts it and doesn't get emotional, that's something he does very well. He just listens to what we're saying, not how we're saying it. As a competitor, he wants to get better so he's just going to take what you're saying and correct the mistake."

What's His Style? Is He a Big Trash Talker?

"He talks his game. He likes to play that one-on-one game with wide receivers and we let him do his thing over there. He's a really physical kid at the line of scrimmage and he's not afraid to open his mouth to let them know he's out there. He's so comfortable on the field, it's when he's in his element. He does a lot of talking with his hands as well."

Does He Like the Gym as Much as the Field?

"He's really been growing to like working in the weight room. When we got him two years ago, he wasn't very familiar with the weight room but he's really grown into more of a gym rat and he likes getting stronger."

If Vance Makes it to Signing Day, He'll be Playing with Devin Bush. How was Their Chemistry Last Season?

"It was really good. I think if you get the two of them together, you'll see how they feed off of each other and push each other. Devin taught him, just like Jamie's teaching the guys now. I think that would carry over and I think that'd be a very comfortable environment for Jamie.

What About Jamie is SEC-Caliber Already?

"He's a really physical corner. That's one of the best things about him. He also has really good footwork. He's tough to block at the line. He just does his job really well. His speed is good but that's one thing he'll continue to work on. He did track this off-season. He doesn't get beat deep."

Vance is a Very Handsy Corner. Does That Ever Create Issues For You Guys?

"I like it. He sets the tone. He's not going to get pushed around out there and he lets them know early. If he gets a penalty, we'll deal with that. But that's a big part of the game, it's hard to find corners that are willing to be that physical."

How Are His Tackling Fundamentals?

"I think he's one of the hardest corners to block and he makes a lot of plays in the run game as well that I think a lot of corners shy away from. I think his fundamentals are strong."

Can He Play Safety?

"I think he's very versatile and he'd do anything he's asked to do. He's a smart kid so he'd be able to do both."

How's His Football IQ?

"He really knows his coverages and that's one of the things he teaches other players. He's very knowledgable. We run a very complex defense. We change it up often and we'll even blitz him off the edge sometimes."
