INDIANAPOLIS — For two days leading up to Saturday’s game, Davonte Davis went everywhere his sunglasses.
The freshman’s confidence that led him to wear shades regardless of the time of day was on display against Oral Roberts, as he calmly knocked down a short jumper with 3.1 seconds remaining to lift Arkansas to a 72-70 win that sent it to the Elite 8.
“I don't think of it as pressure on me for sure,” Davis said. “I think I'm made for them type of plays. As you seen, I knocked the shot down.”
The shot capped a 16-point outburst by Davis, making it his third-highest total this season. He knocked down several of his signature mid-range jumpers and made 7 of 13 attempts.
“We don't run any plays for Devo - at least not right now,” head coach Eric Musselman said. “We will next year, obviously, but he's just a guy that just balls. He just plays.”
None of those shots were more important than his game-winner, though.
The play started with the ball in Jalen Tate’s hands and about a one-second difference between the game and shot clock. With 8 seconds left, he went around a screen by Moses Moody and drove the middle of the lane before passing to Davis.
After one dribble, Davis came to a jump stop and elevated for a high-arching, fadeaway jumper over Kareem Johnson that hit nothing but net.
