2019 big-timer planning Arkansas visit

Who's playing, who's redshirting from 2017 class

Arkansas could really use an upset win over No. 21 Auburn this Saturday at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville (Ark.).

Things haven’t gone well for the Hogs this season, but there is good news for Bret Bielema and the Razorbacks: History is on their side.

Upsetting Auburn is nothing new for Arkansas. In fact, it’s happened several times since the Hogs joined the SEC in 1992.

Here’s a look back at some of the Razorbacks’ biggest upset wins over the Tigers:

1995: Arkansas 30, Auburn 28

This was a wild one at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.

Arkansas entered the game unranked despite being in first place in the SEC West with a record of 5-2 (4-1). The Razorbacks lost their season opener against SMU but upset Alabama in Tuscaloosa two weeks later.

Auburn came into the game 5-2 (3-2) and ranked No. 11 with losses to LSU and eventual national runner-up Florida.

The Tigers fumbled the opening kickoff inside their own 10 yard line, and three plays later Barry Lunney Jr. found Anthony Eubanks to give the Hogs an early 7-0 lead. Lunney made it 14-0 midway through the first quarter with another short touchdown toss to Anthony Lucas.

Madre Hill scored to start the second quarter, and two Todd Latourette field goals gave the Razorbacks a 27-0 lead at half.

Auburn finally got on the board 3 minutes and 6 seconds into the second half. Latourette's third field goal of the night gave the Hogs a 30-7 advantage midway through the third quarter.

After 13 straight points from Auburn, Latourette missed a long field goal with 2:58 remaining. The Tigers went down and scored and converted the 2-point conversion with 18 seconds remaining, making it 30-28, Arkansas.

Auburn recovered the onside kick, but Matt Hawkins' 52-yard field goal attempt fell short and ended the comeback.

Arkansas went on to win the Western Division. The Hogs fell to Florida, 34-3, in the SEC Championship Game and finished 8-5 on the year.

2001: Arkansas 42, Auburn 17

After a 1-3 start with losses to Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia, Arkansas upset South Carolina and took care of Weber State before enjoying a bye week. The Hogs were 3-3 overall and 1-3 in SEC play going into this game.

The Tigers entered Fayetteville at 6-1 (4-0) and ranked No. 17 in the nation two weeks after upsetting No. 1 Florida.

Auburn trailed 28-17 entering the fourth quarter, and with 11 minutes left the Tigers were inside Arkansas' 30 with a chance to make it a one-score game again.

That's when it all came undone for the visitors.

Corey Harris recovered a fumble to flip the field and set up a 32-yard rushing touchdown by Matt Jones. Jermaine Petty's 88-yard interception return for a touchdown with 1:42 remaining put an exclamation point on Arkansas' huge upset win.

The Razorbacks finished the regular season at 7-4 before losing to Oklahoma, 10-3, in the Cotton Bowl.

2002: Arkansas 38, Auburn 17

Run, Talley, run.

The Razorbacks were off to a 2-2 (0-2) start after dropping a 6-overtime game at Tennessee a week prior. They traveled to Jordan-Hare Stadium to face a 4-1 (2-0) Tigers team that sat at No. 24 in the polls.

De'Aarrius Howard got the Hogs on the board first but the Razorbacks trailed 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Fred Talley took over to start the second quarter and set the Hogs up for one of two Mark Pierce touchdowns on the day. Talley's 80-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter gave the Hogs a 21-17 lead, and Bo Mosley's blocked punt set up a late field goal to make it a 24-17 halftime lead.

Arkansas got touchdown runs of 44 yards (Pierce) and 70 yards (Matt Jones) in the second half to pull away from the Tigers.

The Razorbacks lost a home game to Kentucky a week later, but then went on 6-game winning streak that wrapped up a Western Division Championship. Arkansas lost to Georgia in Atlanta, 30-3, and went on to lose to Minnesota in the Music City Bowl.

2006: Arkansas 27, Auburn 10

Auburn began the year at No. 4 and climbed to No. 2 by the time Arkansas showed up with a 3-1 team that was coming off a bye.

The Tigers were undefeated and considered a comfortable favorite, but this game wasn't as close as the final score indicated.

Darren McFadden and Felix Jones ran wild, helping the Razorbacks out-rush the Tigers 279 yards to 60 yards. Mitch Mustain completed 7 of 10 passing attempts, none bigger than a 50-yard catch-and-run by Marcus Monk to give the Hogs a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.

One of McFadden's most memorable touchdown runs, a 63-yarder, came with 5:00 left before halftime and gave the Hogs a 17-7 lead.

Late in the third quarter, Jones essentially put the game out of Auburn's reach on a 1-yard touchdown run that gave Arkansas a 24-10 advantage. Jeremy Davis' 22-yard field goal with 3:53 remaining made it a three-score game and sealed one of Arkansas' biggest wins of the Houston Nutt era.

It was Arkansas' fourth victory in a 10-game winning streak that sent the Hogs back to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game. The Razorbacks fell to eventual national champion Florida, 38-28, and went on to lose to Bret Bielema's Wisconsin Badgers in the Capital One Bowl.

2008: Arkansas 25, Auburn 22

Arkansas was not a good football team in Bobby Petrino's first season as head coach.

After barely getting by Western Illinois and UL-Monroe in the first two games, the Hogs lost to Alabama, Texas and Florida by a combined total of 139-21.

Auburn was 4-2 and ranked No. 23 after losing to ranked opponents LSU and Vanderbilt.

Fort Smith native Kodi Burns gave the Tigers a 20-10 lead with 12:43 left in the third quarter, and it seemed as though Arkansas was on its way to a fourth straight loss.

However, Petrino pulled out a trick play late in the third quarter to make it a game again, as Joe Adams threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Casey Dick and trim Auburn's lead to 20-16.

Shay Haddock made a 44-yard field goal to start the fourth quarter, and Michael Smith raced 63 yards for a touchdown with 8:50 remaining to put the Hogs on top, 25-20. After giving up a safety while draining the clock, Matt Harris picked off Burns with 30 seconds left to seal the win for Arkansas.

The Razorbacks lost four of their next five games before finishing 5-7, but ended the year on a high note with a 31-30 upset win over LSU in the regular season finale.

2009: Arkansas 44, Auburn 23

Auburn came into Fayetteville 5-0 (2-0) and ranked No. 17 in the nation, while the Razorbacks were off to a 2-2 (0-2) start in Petrino's second year.

The game was never really in doubt after the first quarter.

Broderick Green and Michael Smith both had first-half touchdown runs, and Ryan Mallett hit Greg Childs and D.J. Williams for scoring strikes to give the Razorbacks a 27-3 lead at the break.

Mallett's 4-yard plunge midway through the third quarter made it 34-3 Arkansas. Auburn scored 20 unanswered points, but Green's second touchdown of the day with just over 11 minutes remaining sealed the deal.

Michael Smith finished with 157 yards of offense and a touchdown.

Arkansas was hosed at No. 1 Florida a week later but won four of its last five games of the regular season. The Razorbacks finished 8-5 after a win over East Carolina in the Liberty Bowl.

2015: Arkansas 54, Auburn 46 (4 OT)

This one might not be considered a true upset, but Auburn entered this matchup at 4-2 (1-2) while the Razorbacks were 2-4 (1-2).

The two teams swapped field goals in the last 1:07 of regulation before going into one of the wildest overtime battles in recent SEC history.

Arkansas came out on top when Josh Liddell broke up a pass on 4th and 9.

The win turned Arkansas' season around, as the Razorbacks went on to win six of their last seven games with the only loss coming to Mississippi State on a blocked field goal attempt.
