FAYETTEVILLE — Moses Moody has collected the first of what could be many awards in his collegiate career.

The Little Rock native was named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday, after averaging 21 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2 assists in wins over UT-Arlington and Lipscomb last week.

It is the first time an Arkansas player has been named SEC Freshman of the Week since Daniel Gafford earned the award three times in 2017-18. Only two other guards have taken home the weekly honor in the past decade - Anton Beard in 2014-15 and BJ Young in 2011-12.

Following a couple of tough shooting nights in which he lived at the free throw line, Moody broke out with a 24-point performance against the Mavericks on Wednesday and then followed it up with an 18-point effort against the Bisons.

A top-60 recruit coming out of Montverde Academy, Moody shot just 23.8 percent (5 of 21) from the floor in his first two games and made only two of 10 three-point attempts. Last week, he went 14 of 20 (70 percent) from the floor and 4 of 6 (66.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

It’s also worth noting that Moody has continued to show an ability to draw fouls. His 29 free throw attempts through four games is actually ahead of Mason Jones’ pace last season, when he led the country and broke the single-season school record in that category. Moody is also converting, making 86.2 percent of his free throws.

Perhaps the area in which head coach Eric Musselman was most pleased with Moody last week was on the boards. The 6-foot-6 guard grabbed just five total rebounds in his first two games, but pulled down nine and eight against UT-Arlington and Lipscomb, respectively.

The Razorbacks were scheduled to travel to Tulsa on Tuesday, but that game has been postponed because of COVID-19 issues with the Golden Hurricane. They are now searching for a replacement game to play this week.

The next game currently on Arkansas’ schedule is Saturday, when it will host UCA for a 5 p.m. tip after the football team’s game against Alabama.
