FAYETTEVILLE — Chad Morris isn’t giving any clues as to who will line up at quarterback first for Arkansas when No. 11 Auburn comes to town Saturday.
After Nick Starkel struggled in last week’s loss to Kentucky, the second-year coach reopened the competition. Starkel and Ben Hicks were listed with an “or” on the depth chart and have split first-team reps at practice this week, Morris said.
There is no timetable for when the Razorbacks will settle on one or the other. They could even wait until just before the 11 a.m. kickoff to name a starter.
“At this point, I want these guys both to prepare like they’re starters,” Morris said. “If I don’t name one until we get to the bus ride over here, then they will be well equipped and well prepared.”
Morris added that “everything is a possibility” for Saturday’s game, including playing both quarterbacks or - as he indicated after the last game - even redshirt freshman John Stephen Jones or true freshman K.J. Jefferson.
Coming off the bench hasn’t seemed to bother Hicks and Starkel. They have completed 64.1 percent of their passes for 8.1 yards per attempt when coming on in relief of the other, compared to just 53.0 percent for 6.3 yards per attempt as starters.
