FAYETTEVILLE — Balls were flying out of Baum-Walker Stadium left and right Thursday night.
The Razorbacks crushed five home runs - all in the first four innings - and cruised to a 14-4 win over No. 16 LSU. They collected a hit in each of the first seven innings and scored in all but the fifth and eighth, leading by as many as 11 runs.
It was the most runs Arkansas has scored against the Tigers since a 14-13 win in 2008 and its largest margin of victory in the series since a 16-1 win in 1997.
Early on, it looked like LSU was going to make things interesting. The Tigers got to Arkansas ace Isaiah Campbell with a leadoff bloop single by Josh Smith and RBI double by Antoine Duplantis in the first.
Casey Martin made sure that lead didn’t last too long, as he hit a solo shot over the left field bullpen to tie it up. He now has 12 home runs this season, which is one shy of matching his freshman total.
LSU took the lead again on a leadoff home run by Daniel Cabrera, but then Campbell really settled in. After giving up three hits to the first six Tigers, the right-hander retired 15 of the final 17 he faced.
By going six innings and allowing only the two earned runs, Campbell notched his 10th quality start and improved to 9-1. He allowed only four hits and one walk while striking out four.
That was more than enough run support for the Razorbacks, as Casey Opitz put them back on top with a two-run homer in the second and they were off and running.
Dominic Fletcher’s two-run homer highlighted a three-run third inning and then Arkansas exploded for a six-run fourth inning, which featured a 420-foot leadoff homer and sacrifice fly by Trevor Ezell sandwiched a grand slam by Jack Kenley.
Arkansas’ other runs came on a wild pitch and RBI single by Fletcher.
It wasn’t until the Razorbacks brought in Kole Ramage out of the bullpen that the Tigers managed to score again. Cabrera hit another leadoff homer in the seventh and Smith added an RBI single.
Ramage bounced back with a perfect eighth inning and then freshman Jacob Burton closed it out.
The Razorbacks will go for their first series win over LSU since 2011 at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The game will be streamed on SEC Network-plus, meaning it can be watched online on ESPN3.com or the WatchESPN app.
Freshman left-hander Patrick Wicklander (5-1, 3.91 ERA) will take the mound for Arkansas and face off with LSU right-hander Eric Walker (4-4, 5.30 ERA).
Other Tidbits
~Cold temperatures, the threat of rain and the game being on a Thursday night likely kept some folks away from the ballpark, but there was still a paid attendance of 9,220 with a “tickets scanned” number of 7,283.
~Arkansas’ five home runs tied a season high set against Northwestern State. It was their most against an SEC opponent since hitting five in both games of a doubleheader against Kentucky to open conference play last season.
~Fletcher’s third-inning home run was the 32nd of his career, which is one shy of cracking the UA’s all-time top-10 list. Ryan Fox (2001-03) and Kevin McReynolds (1979-81) are currently tied for 10th with 33.
~With the one hit by Kenley in the fourth inning, the Razorbacks now have five grand slams this season. They have each been hit by a different player: Christian Franklin at Texas, Heston Kjerstad against Oral Roberts, Martin against Mississippi State, Fletcher against Mississippi State and now Kenley against LSU. Arkansas hit just three all of last season.
~Cade Beloso was originally penciled in to start at first base for LSU, but an ankle injury suffered Tuesday against Louisiana Tech eventually led to him being moved to designated hitter before the game started. That forced the Tigers to take Giovanni DiGiacomo out of the lineup and insert CJ Willis.
