Solid numbers, but untested players abound at linebacker

Arkansas is in pretty good shape in terms of numbers at linebacker, and at the very least (and the very best) there are a lot of young players who have yet to have an opportunity.

Poor linebacker recruiting in both talent level and overall numbers was a major downfall for the second level of the defense, especially midway through Bret Bielema’s time as the Arkansas head coach, 2013-2017. More recently the numbers have been much improved but last season injuries decimated any would-be depth. The poor results in recruiting date back to late in the Bobby Petrino era.

On the defensive line, they still brought in players even if some did not work out. At linebacker, they just weren’t signing enough guys in the first couple of years…and on top of that too many they did sign did not work out. He finally addressed that in 2016 (more on that in a moment).
