Hogs extend seventh in-state offer
For the third straight game, Arkansas struggled to score runs, this time losing 4-3 to Cal Poly in a disappointing upset in San Diego (Calif.) on Friday afternoon.
The Hogs recorded 8 hits on the day but stranded multiple baserunners in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings which proved to be the difference. Starter Blaine Knight put in six quality innings, throwing 7 strikeouts and only allowing 1 run, but got a no-decision on the day.
Cal Poly hit a mediocre 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position, but the lone hit earned them the victory. Center fielder Alex McKenna drove in the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning.
Here's how the Mustangs shocked Arkansas, 4-3:
THE WINNING INNING
Heston Kjerstad misjudged a fly ball in the second inning, scoring Tyler Marinconz and giving Cal Poly a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Kjerstad made up for his mistake by tying the game, 1-1, on an RBI groundout.
Unforced errors hurt the Hogs as a throwing mistake by freshman pitcher Jackson Rutledge and a wild pitch by Bryce Bonnin put two more Cal Poly runs on the board, making it 3-1 in the top of the seventh. Dominic Fletcher hit a two-run shot to left center, tying the game at 3 apiece in the bottom of the inning.
Alex McKenna hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth to give the Mustangs the lead once again, 4-3. The Hogs went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, ending any chance of a comeback.
STAT OF THE GAME
Arkansas was extremely poor with runners in scoring position, going 0 for 8 and stranding 8 total baserunners.
Leadoff Jax Biggers went 0 for 5 today. He's now 0 for 9 with 3 strikeouts in the Razorbacks' two west coast games.
The Razorbacks had just as many errors today as runs scored (3).

PLAYER OF THE GAME
Cal Poly center fielder Alex McKenna drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the final inning. McKenna finished the day 2 for 5 with that lone RBI.
Blaine Knight was a major bright spot for Arkansas, striking out 7 Mustang batters and only walking one in six innings of work despite dealing with a tightened strike zone. Knight allowed 1 run on 5 hits in his second outing of the year.
Fletcher's tw0-run bomb wasn't enough for a Razorback victory, but it did give the Hogs some life by tying the game up in the seventh. The center fielder finished with 2 RBIs and 1 run.
