Second half start dooms Hogs at Texas A&M, 80-66

Arkansas’ chances at Texas A&M took a quick downward turn just six minutes into the second half when a 1-point A&M halftime lead turned into a 21-point advantage before an 80-66 TAMU win.

Up 33-32 at the break, A&M came out on fire and connected on 9 of their first 10 shots, including 7 of 8 from 3-point range while the Hogs were just 2 of 13 from the floor. The result was a 26-5 run that turned into a 59-38 A&M lead with 13:37 to play.

Arkansas (15-7, 4-5 SEC) got the lead down to 9 points, 66-57 with a 13-2 stretch down to the 6:06 mark, but it wasn’t enough to overcome A&M’s start to the second half. TAMU (14-8, 3-6 SEC) finished on a 12-2 run to take a 19-point lead, 78-59, with 1:27 remaining.

Tyler Davis scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in 34 minutes of action to lead A&M. The Aggies were 28 of 59 from the floor on the night (47.5 percent), including a blistering 15 of 25 (60 percent) in the second half alone. A&M was 7 of 12 (58.3 percent) from 3-point range in the second half and 10 of 26 (38.5 percent) overall. The Aggies were also 14 of 25 (56 percent) from the free throw line.

Daryl Macon finished with 20 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists while Jaylen Barford scored 19 with 5 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the Razorbacks. Arkansas was 25 of 61 on field goals (41 percent), 8 of 22 from deep (36.4 percent) and 8 of 13 from the free throw line (61.5).

SECOND HALF

Up 33-32 at halftime, the Aggies came out with an 11-2 run to take a 10-point lead, 44-34 with 17:52 on a 3-pointer by Admon Gilder. It was the third 3-pointer of the half for A&M. After a Razorback timeout, D.J. Hogg hit the fourth 3-pointer of the half to make it 47-34, a 14-2 run, with 17:11 to go.

Hogg hit the fifth A&M 3-pointer of the half with 16:23 to go to make it a 50-37 Aggie lead. At that point it was a 17-5 start to the half for A&M, and TAMU was 5 of 5 from 3-point range in the second half. By the time the barrage was over, it was an 26-5 run and a 59-37 A&M lead with 13:37 to play. The stretch lasted 5 minutes and 49 seconds, giving A&M a 21-point lead.

Arkansas started the second half 2 of 13 while A&m started 9 of 10, including a 7 of 8 start from 3-point range in the second half. At the 8:58 mark with Arkansas down 64-44, The Razorbacks went on a 13-2 run and got the lead down to 66-57 on a long 3-pointer by Macon with 6:06 remaining. But from there, A&M outscored Arkansas 12-2 to take a 78-59 lead, 19 points, with 1:27 remaining before taking the 80-66 win.

FIRST HALF

Macon entered the game after the first media timeout with 15:31 to play and Arkansas up 9-8. He hit a 3-pointer from the baseline on his first Arkansas possession with 15:06 remaining in the half.

Since Arkansas took a 9-8 lead with 15:50 to play on a dunk by Darious Hall, the Hogs went on a 10-0 run to take a 17-8 lead with 14:40 to play after a 3-pointer from Barford to put him at 7 points at that time.

From there, TAMU battled back and went on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 19-19 with 10:06 to play after a layup by Jay Jay Chandler. The positive stretch continued for the Aggies as they pushed the streak out to a 19-4 to take a 27-21 lead with 7:24 left.

Both teams hit a dry spell that lasted 3 minutes and 11 seconds for Texas A&M before Davis scored with 4:13 left to make it a 29-23 game. Arkansas’ drought ended on a dunk by Hall to close A&M’s lead to 31-24 with 3:24 left, a span of 3 minutes and 44 seconds.

Starting with Hall’s dunk, Arkansas outscored the Aggies 9-2 the rest of the way to close the lead to a single point, 33-32 A&M. Macon and Hall led Arkansas with 10 points apiece. The Hogs were 13 of 29 from the floor (44.8 percent), 2 of 9 from downtown (22.2 percent) and 4 of 5 from the free throw line (80.0 percent).

Gilder led the Aggies with 10 points, and TAMU was 13 of 34 on field goals (38.2 percent), 3 of 4 from beyond the arc (21.4 percent) and 4 of 9 from the line (44.4 percent).
