When Parkview senior Jared Summons got the call on Tuesday, he almost dropped the phone. The center's coach had told him he'd be getting an important call but didn't reveal that it would be the Arkansas Razorbacks, saying only that "his future" would be on the other side of the phone line.
"I picked up the call and he said it was a coach from the University of Arkansas and I almost dropped my phone, I had no idea it was going to be Arkansas," Summons said. "We talked and he explained how all the preferred walk-on stuff goes and when we got off the phone I was just so pleased, I couldn't believe it was Arkansas."
Summons, 6-foot-4, 290-pounds, was a defensive tackle until this season at Parkview and the Razorbacks have liked what they've seen in just one season from him at center, enough to offer him just the second preferred walk-on spot in their 2021 class. Punter Patrick Foley has already accepted his PWO offer.
Before his senior season began, Summons got some attention when he attended the Rivals 3-stripe combine all the way down in New Orleans. His combine performance got him one of only a handful of camp invites and he felt that was going to be a turning point in his recruitment, and it was, until COVID-19 hit and coaches couldn't come see him.
"After that camp, I thought that was an eye-opener to the world. I didn't have any offers before that and shortly after that I got one from Northeastern State. It didn't seem real."
Offers from Arkansas Tech, UT-Martin, Henderson State, Austin Peay and Missouri Southern State followed. The Razorbacks waited and offered Summons a preferred walk-on opportunity the same month he put out his senior tape.
