NASHVILLE, Ten. -- Nobody said that it was going to be easy for Arkansas to land the commitment of Rivals100 wide receiver Trey Knox, but it certainly seems as though the its best chance with him comes down something that the other programs recruiting him don’t have: His relationship with the Razorbacks’ coaching staff.
“The staff out there is just chill,” he said. “They’re up on it; Coach (Chad) Morris is just hip. He knows about the new stuff, the lingo, and Coach (Kelvin) Bolden - one of the analysts for the receivers - I talk with him too so things with them are great.”
Knox was one of the top performers at the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by Adidas on Sunday, and finished with a couple of breath-taking catches in one-on-one reps that showed what it is that has so many looking for his commitment. He also earned an invite to the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by Adidas next month.
That’s great news for Arkansas, who has to be feeling good about its standing with him. Although they have to fend off teams like Notre Dame and Ohio State, he’ll be on campus for his official visit on June 7, and the staff will have its latest shot at convincing him that he’s the next man up to be a star for the Razorbacks.
“I haven’t got things down to a Top 5 yet, but I would say that Arkansas is most definitely going to be in it,” he said. “I like hearing that I can be that guy coming in for them. They told me that they don’t have anyone that looks like me there, so just hearing that makes me open my eyes and that really appeals to me.”
Arkansas’ top offensive assistants have already made a strong effort letting Knox know how much of a priority he is, but Morris isn’t taking any chances. He said that the head coach has taken a personal role in making sure that he knows how much he’s wanted, and his recent reputation of producing NFL-caliber receivers can’t be discounted.
“Me and Coach (Justin) Stepp talk on a daily basis,” he said. “Coach (Joe) Craddock and I have a great relationship. Even me and Coach Morris talk all the time. So just building the relationship with the Arkansas coaches is something I appreciate. I believe in what they’re doing, coming from SMU, and they just put two receivers in the league, so that’s a good look for them.”
