College Football Round-Up: Week I
Brett Beaird
Special to HawgSports.com
Week one of SEC play has some good games on tap such as Cal at Tennessee, Hawaii at Alabama, Washington State at Auburn, Memphis at Ole Miss and Mississippi State hosting South Carolina. Rece Davis, the host of ESPN's College Football GameDay Final weighs in on all the storylines of the week's action.
WESTERN KENTUCKY VS. GEORGIA: What do the Bulldogs need to get out of this game? What can quarterback Joe Tereshinski provide in his first start?
Davis said the Bulldog coaches must establish a nice rhythm offensively and get Tereshinski comfortable in the passing game.
"We all remember the Florida game last year where the Georgia coaches called the game so conservatively, particularly, so close to the end of the game that they diminished their chance to win," Davis said. "They know they've got running backs. They're replacing Max Jean-Gilles on the offensive line. They still believe they can run the ball. They need to develop some confidence in their receivers and quarterback and find some balance on offense. I think they will"
Getting the season off to a solid start is vital for the Bulldogs.
"That's (finding balance) very important going into that road trip the next week against South Carolina," Davis said. "The next two games against UAB and Colorado should provide an opportunity to develop a rhythm, if they're going to play two quarterbacks. Establish a bit of rhythm in the passing game and develop a little confidence in the receivers is the most important thing to come out of the first game."
CAL AT TENNESSEE: How big is this game for the Vols? How would a loss affect the team for the rest of the season?
This is a pivotal opener for the Vols.
"The game is gargantuan. Cal is better on paper. But, historically, the perception is that Cal shouldn't beat Tennessee at home. If they do, could it open old wounds from last year, " Davis said. "Cal has quarterback issues, but they've got a great running back in Marshawn Lynch. Justin Forsett is also dangerous. They've got one of the better defenses in the Pac-10."
Davis said he wonders how Tennessee will react if they lose the game against Cal.
"Tennessee lost a lot of close games (four losses by 17 points) last year," he said. "If they do it again how much will that damage their psyche? If (starting quarterback Erik) Ainge is shaky in his performance how will it impact his confidence? What do his teammates think of his ability to lead? I think this game as much as any opening game, anywhere, will set the tone for each team the entire season."
SOUTHERN MISS AT FLORIDA: How dangerous of a game is this for Florida? How will the banged up Gator offensive line perform?
Davis cautioned that the Golden Eagles should not be overlooked.
"With a Gator offensive line that is battered and bruised and put together with duct tape and bailing wire, I think they have a dangerous opening game against Southern Mississippi," Davis said. "Not from the standpoint that I think they will lose. I'm not sure that Southern Miss has enough offense to beat Florida, Southern Miss wasn't as consistent on defense last year as they have been in years past. They've put an emphasis on it. They've had an entire off-season to aim for the shocker. Their D could give Florida some problems, if the Gators battered and bruised O-line isn't solid."
SOUTH CAROLINA AT MISSISSIPPI STATE: How important of a road game is this for South Carolina? What does this game mean to the Bulldogs?
Davis said if South Carolina is going to be a contender in the SEC East, they simply have to win this road game.
"Their schedule sets up really nice in the SEC," Davis said. "They couldn't ask for three better road trips out of four than Mississippi State, Kentucky and Vanderbilt," he said. "They do have to play Auburn at Columbia, but they miss Alabama and LSU from the SEC West and really only have the road trip to Florida as a giant road block away from home. If they're going to be a contender in the SEC East, and they have the schedule for it, they have to win the opening game on Thursday night."
He added that for Mississippi State, the South Carolina game is very important for them because of their tough schedule.
"I just think from a confidence standpoint, if they could beat South Carolina and Steve Spurrier, who has never won in Starkville, it could just do wonders for their confidence," Davis said.
KENTUCKY AT LOUISVILLE: Will the Wildcats give a similar effort (31-24) against their rival as they did last year? What would another gritty performance do for Kentucky?
Although this is a big game for Kentucky, Davis said they are completely outclassed from a talent standpoint.
"Kentucky was in a similar boat last year and played their guts out and I expect them to do the same thing," he said. "Louisville is a top 10-12 team in the country and Kentucky is not close to that. It's important not to get blasted and wind up demoralized, but I just don't see them winning the game at all."
VANDERBILT AT MICHIGAN: What affect will the opening three games have on the Commodores? Could Vanderbilt recover from three straight losses?
Davis said he couldn't think of two tougher road trips for the first two games that at Michigan and Alabama.
"They're going to have to hang on through the first three weeks of the season including the third game at home against Arkansas and see if they can their bearings back together later in September when they play teams like Tennessee State and Temple," he said. "Should they play Michigan or Alabama tough, it might signal that the post-Cutler era in Nashville might not be as painful as some anticipates. Bobby Johnson is doing a fine job at Vanderbilt, but I think the opening part of the schedule is so difficult it might impact their entire season."
WASHINGTON STATE AT AUBURN: How good are the Cougars? Will the Tigers take them lightly?
Davis said Auburn has to be careful especially after the Cougars blew a bunch of close games (five losses by a total of 16 points) last year.
"Their running back Jerome Harrison, who ran for 1,900 yards last year, is gone," Davis said. "Their quarterback Alex Brink is back and Jason Hill (62 catches for 1,097 yards) is a fine wide receiver. Wazzu has been able to score, but their defense is bad. They had some gaffes on the sidelines and on the field that cost them several games in the Pac- 10 a year ago."
He added that Pac-10 schools have been very effective against SEC schools in the past few years.
"Auburn shouldn't take Wazzu too lightly, but the Tigers have them totally outclassed. Plus, there's the home field advantage," Davis said. "Barring some kind of catastrophe, Auburn should be able to get through this opening game without any problem."
LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE AT LSU: What does LSU need to accomplish in its opener? How will coach Les Miles handle the quarterback situation in the opener?
Davis said the quarterback situation is important in the opening game.
"Sometimes in an opening game, the offense starts sluggishly then as the game wears on the second team guy comes in against a tired and overmatched opponent and looks great," he said. "It can be misleading, but it can also generate a lot of fodder on message boards and so forth. The best case scenario for LSU is to come out and look crisp in the beginning and both (JaMarcus) Russell and (Matt) Flynn look good in order to continue healthy competition without it developing into something that could be divisive."
HAWAII AT ALABAMA: What can the Tide expect from Hawaii? How important is the Tide's pass rush in this game?
Davis said Hawaii, an experienced team, could throw for a ton of yards as all of coach June Jones teams do.
"(Warrior quarterback) Colt Brennan has a year in the system and understands what they're trying to accomplish and how to use their receivers," he said. "They'll be going after some green spots on the Alabama defense. Alabama's got new safeties back there. They've got a couple of changes at linebacker."
He added that the Tide must generate a pass rush.
"Hawaii can get rid of the ball quickly, but if Alabama gives them extra time and don't force them out of their comfort zone, then Alabama has a problem," Davis said. "This is a dangerous opening game for Alabama with a new quarterback in John Parker Wilson and several new defensive players going against this team. Hawaii's not as talented as Alabama, but they could potentially give Alabama some problems."
He continued…
"That being said, Alabama poses myriad problems for the Warriors," Davis said. "Namely, just how do they plan to stop Kenneth Darby? Defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville has been known to leave tickets for Elvis. If #34 in crimson gets loose, it'll be Jerry's D playing "All Shook Up" while he checks into Heartbreak Hotel."
SOUTHERN CAL AT ARKANSAS: How big is the revenge factor in this game? Will the Trojans be able to reload after losing many of their offensive weapons?
Davis said Arkansas wants revenge because USC dropped 70 points on them last year.
"Instead," Davis said. "Arkansas should've sent Pete Carroll a thank you note and a box of chocolates for not putting 100 on them. Trust me, they could've."
This series reminds Davis of another one in the Big 12.
"The most comparable scenario that I can think of is when Oklahoma beat Texas A & M 77-0 and the next year the Aggies had a chance to win the game at home (OU won 42-35)," he said.
Davis said with all the personnel changes that USC has undergone, the Hogs have got a chance to give them trouble and surprise them in the early going.
"Remember that Trojan coach Pete Carroll has established a recruiting juggernaut and the last time they went on the road in the SEC (against Auburn) with all those questions of new quarterback and new running back they found Matt Leinart, and Lindale White and Reggie Bush," he said. "I'm not saying they are going to find talent like that again, but I am saying they are putting very capable players in those positions. SC has four freshman running backs that have been impressive. John David Booty was as highly thought of as any QB in the country when he arrived at SC."
MEMPHIS AT OLE MISS: How does this game affect recruiting between the teams? How intense is this rivalry?
Davis mused that this will be another opportunity for Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron to build that fence around Memphis.
"He's wanted to build a fence up there," he said. "There have apparently been a few loose boards. They can give the perception to kids who want to stay in the area and play that Ole Miss is a more attraction destination. They can deliver the message that Memphis without tailback DeAngelo Williams isn't quite what it has been the last few years. The rivalry is very intense for the Memphis players. To me, it seems comparable to when Southern Miss plays Auburn or Alabama."
