Every camp for the first scrimmage, one of my primary focuses is to take time to individually focus on the newer players - watch them from when they line up until the play is over - to get an idea of how they move, how comfortable they look and what kind of upside they may have.

Whaley, 5-11, 217, is the real deal and is the most physically gifted running back on campus. The things he was good at in high school are translating over, now. He does a nice job weaving his way through traffic, and I never considered that a strength of his, and he also does a really nice job running through tackles. He made plays against the No. 1 and No. 2 defenses Saturday. Rawleigh Williams consistently picked up yardage and had a 14-yarder, but Whaley was the only one to regularly break off big runs. He had a 21-yarder on his third carry just 18 plays into the scrimmage and also had a 16-yarder against the No. 2 defense. He had a 12-yarder against the No. 1 defense and then had a 25-yarder up the middle on them halfway through the scrimmage out of a 3rd-and-10. He finished with an 11-yard tackle-breaking touchdown run against the No. 1 defense after Williams had pounded away at them four times for 37 yards on the drive. With Williams' steady running and Whaley's big-play ability, that could be a nice duo.
