Cantrell drops 15 pounds

Austin Cantrell has dropped his weight from the near 270 pounds he played at last year to 255 for this season. Cantrell has been heralded as a terrific blocker with decent receiving skills, but the drop in weight shouldn’t affect him as a blocker too much. Last season, Cantrell hauled in 13 passes for 120 yards with 2 touchdowns.

“I think he could 210 pound and still block. He’s just naturally strong and tough, and he’s got really good fundamentals. Has kind of naturally had them,” tight ends coach Barry Lunney jr. said.

Equal time won't last at tight end

The first two tight ends to go onto the field during open practices have been Cantrell and Cheyenne O’Grady, but on Tuesday O’Grady said several of the tight ends are splitting time fairly equally with the first group. Is that how it will play out this season?

“I don’t think it’s going to be a revolving door. I don’t think it’ll be a ‘dial a guy,’” tight ends coach Barry Lunney Jr. said. “What we look like right now could be drastically different three weeks from now for a myriad of reasons. One of the reasons we’ve done the rotation the way we’ve done is to give equal opportunities for guys to establish themselves or prove themselves.

“I’m kind of anxious to see how this all shakes out myself.”

Patton game ready?

The structure at Arizona Western is similar in many ways to what Arkansas does, so that has allowed JUCO transfer Jeremy Patton to transition more easily since arriving. The nation’s No. 1 junior college tight end recruit has worked exclusively as the inline tight end, the Y, since arriving at Arkansas in July.
